Barrelhouse was formed in the early 1970’s as a club to play midweek 15-a-side rugby in Sharjah under floodlights. The fixtures were always between The Sharjah Pensioners and Barrelhouse with simple rules, whereby those under the age of 35 had to play out of position and prohibiting the kicking of the ball except when in the 22.

Although Barrelhouse have played irregularly in Arabian Gulf leagues and cups they have always been more of an event focused team who for many years in the eighties and nineties had considerable success at the Dubai Sevens winning the bowl and the plate competitions on several occasions. In last year’s Dubai Sevens the club entered three teams; the YOBS (Young Old Boys, lads who grew up in the Gulf who are now at university), the International Vets (a social team) and a team in the local AGRFU competition.

The club has also toured extensively, competing in tournaments worldwide including the Kinsale Sevens in Ireland, the Amsterdam Sevens and the Phuket Sevens, amongst others.

Barrelhouse does describe itself as a drinking club with a rugby problem, whilst we like to remain competitive, it’s our supporters that are remember the most, rugby fans whom are vibrant, enthusiastic, energetic (in the beer tent!) and good natured. The team itself are always remembered, although possibly this is due to their shocking pink shirts.

It is hoped that Barrelhouse will grow back into regular/ irregular participants in local rugby competitions.
