Teams announced for Cable & Wireless Hong Kong Women’s Rugby Sevens 2010

The twelve participating teams for the Cable & Wireless Worldwide Hong Kong Women’s Rugby Sevens 2010 (HKWRS) have been announced today by the tournament organizers.  The event will be held on Friday March 26, 2010 at the Hong Kong Football Club with the Cup final being played at 7.04pm in the Hong Kong Stadium as part of the Cathay Pacific/Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens 2010.

Bahrain steamroller Muscat to open gap at top

Bahrain, for twenty years the dominant team in Arabian Gulf rugby are well on their way to regaining former glories.

Last weekend they absolutely annihilated Muscat running in thirteen tries, iwth nine players contributing. Muscat’s cause was seriously damaged in only the second minute of the game when a freak collision saw their top scorer Johan De Lange and another senior player Ross O’Loughlin have to leave the field for the remainder of the game.

Kuwait’s inability to field a team and the resulting forfeiture of the game, meant Quins were gifted a 20-0 win and got the all important bonus point that they sought. Although the maximum five sees them join Bahrain on 27 points at the top of the table it might well prove to be a pyrrhic victory.

Welcome to Rugby in the Arabian Gulf. Until December 31st 2010 this region is made up the countries of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. After that date the countries will be represented individually in line with an I.R.B. directive.

There is a well established league structure in both men’s and women’s club rugby and a strong development programme introducing the sport to the Arabic residents with several new teams having been formed recently

The Arabian Gulf hosted the Rugby World Cup Sevens in 2009 and Dubai is the venue for the first stop on the I.R.B. Sevens circuit each year.

  • Al Azri grabs hat-trick inside fifteen minutes of debut

    Last weekend saw the third round of games in the Arabian Gulf Bowl and yet again it was Al Ain Amblers who impressed. OK they didn’t rack up a century this time round, but they weren’t far off, with a 95-7 destruction of Doha’ second string. Al Ain have now scored 254 points in three cup outings this term and only conceded a measly ten points.

    Al Ain Amblers Rugby Club hosted it 7’s Youth Tournament in Al Ain this weekend at the club grounds situated in the Palm Sports Resort Al Ain. The Al Ain Rugby Club comes under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Finance Department and Chairman of the Palm Sports Resort, which is managed by H.E. Mohammed Rashid Al Nasseri. This marvelous facility has been provided for us as part of Sheikh Mohammed’s vision of sport for all in Al Ain.

    In the second round of Danway Gulf cup games last weekend Kuwait Nomads nearly pulled off a win of epic proportions. True, they were playing at home, but their opponents were Bahrain who have won three from three this season. For Nomads, last year’s whipping boys and winless this season, their one point loss to the Premiership leaders is a huge achievement and will give them confidence going forward.
