South African Vipers took the top spot in the Albitt Cup as the reigning champions after edging out Fiji’s Davetelavu  in a thrilling finish to the 62nd Singapore Cricket Club Rugby 7s 2009. They beat the Fijians in a score of 24-0 when the final whistle blew.

Welcome to Rugby in India. The first ever recorded game played in India was on Christmas Day 1872 at the CFC, Calcutta.

Once solely an expatriate sport, rugby has now been embraced by the local population. There are over 17,000 registered players throughout the country and the game is played in every single state and territory. There are over 50 senior men’s clubs and a rapidly expanding number of women participating in the sport. Rugby is now played in many private and government schools.

The men’s national team compete in the Asian 5 Nations Division 2 and the women’s team will compete in the 2009 Asian Womens Sevens Championships.

The city of Delhi will host the Commonwealth Games in 2010 where rugby sevens will be played.

    Army Red won the All India and South Asia Cup for the third consecutive year on Saturday. The first half was a tightly fought contest, but the Army team always looked to have the edge. In the 17th minute a converted Parvinder Singh try gave Army a 7-0 lead and that is how the score remained until the break.

    Sighs of relief all around as the focus moved back one hundred per cent to the legitimate rugby action at Bombay Gymkhana yesterday. First up Uzbekistan took on the runners-up of the last two years Chennai Cheetahs. The Cheetahs no doubt influenced by their Kiwi imports treated the crowd to their own version of the ‘Tamil Haka’ before the game. Unfortunately for them it didn’t manage to inspire them enough to propel them to glory.
