Welcome to Rugby in Pakistan. The game has been played in Karachi since 1926 but was exclusively an expatriate sport. Since the mid nineties rugby has seen a rise in popularity amongst local players. There are several strong club sides, university teams and development clubs.
Rugby has been introduced at provincial and district level by the Pakistan Rugby Union and moves are afoot to introduce rugby as a sport in schools throughout the country.
Pakistan will compete in Division 2 of the Asian 5 Nations this year.

To celebrate the independence day of Pakistan and to promote sports and cultural activities among the youth the Punjab Rugby Association, under the auspices of the Pakistan Rugby Union and Punjab Olympic Association, is hosting The Azadi Rugby Cup on 14th August 2009 The venue for the event is DHA Rugby Stadium. Entrance is free for all who wish to enjoy a day of watching exciting rugby, played in a festive family atmosphere, over the holiday weekend. The tournament will start at 3 pm and continue untill 9 pm with Live DJ music , commentary on the matches and free refreshments for families.

Last year’s 4th Bledisloe Cup match, played in Hong Kong, between the Wallabies and the All Blacks netted both unions millions of dollars in much needed additional income and for that reason above any of the other more philanthropic suggestions, Asian rugby fans will have the opportunity to see two of the three highest ranked teams in the world battle it out in Tokyo’s National Stadium on 31st October 2009.

All the matches in the 2009 Asian 5 Nations have now been completed and the final results are detailed below. Japan again dominated the Top Five, but Kazakhstan surprised everyone, not least Korea by finishing in second place. Next year the tournament will double as the qualifiers for the World Cup 2011. In the highly unlikely circumstances that the Arabian Gulf were to qualify it may cause some consternation, as their union is being officially split up into its constituent countries on December 31st 2010.

Rugby sevens and golf have emerged as the favourites for inclusion in the 2016 Olympic Games. Seven sports; baseball, golf, softball, rugby sevens, roller sports, squash and karate recently put their case to the International Olympic Committee’s Executive Board in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Here are a few photos from a recent under 14's match played on 10th June 2009 between Khichiwala (black) and Fort Abbas (tan). The match took place at the Government High School in Fort Abbas and was won narrowly, 24-17 by Khichiwala.

Malaysia booked its place in the 2010 HSBC Asian Five Nations Division I tournament after a comprehensive 43-15 victory over an under strength China in today’s final of the HSBC Asian Five Nations Division II Tournament played at the UiTM Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In the 3rd/4th place play-off match India outclassed Pakistan 44-3 to maintain its position in Division II while Pakistan will be relegated to next year’s Division III competition.

China who are currently placed 44th in the official International Rugby Board World Rankings and came into this year’s Asian 5 Nations Division 2 Tournament as overwhelming favourites struggled to an unconvincing win over Pakistan yesterday.
