The Sons of Lapu Lapu made their presence felt once again at the Kiama 7s rugby tournament held last week on the South Coast of NSW, Australia. The Sydney based Filipino heritage team was one of 48 teams competing in the carnival which included the Australian 7s team, a large number of Sydney and Canberra Premiership clubs and two Tongan sides who flew over especially for the tournament. The team performed admirably and were eliminated by Randwick, the eventual Plate winners.

The Extinct Volcanoes remarkable form continued last weekend at the Bangkok Tens and they have now come away victorious in three of the four veterans tournaments they have entered. Only the application of some local rule changes in the 2009 Phuket Tens have prevented the Philippines over 35’s maintaining a one hundred per cent record.

It is with great sadness that we report the death of one of Asian rugby’s most colourful characters Nicholas ‘Nick’ Villeperieux. Nick passed away on the morning of February 20th 2010 in the Philippines due to thyroid cancer at the age of 52.

The Philippine Rugby Football Union has managed to secure the Sydney Football Stadiums (SFS) to take a squad of thirty players to participate in a one week Elite Training Camp in Sydney, Australia this coming April 1 - 8. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the Philippine Rugby Football Union and the national athletes will train, live and compete in world class facilities that include the University Of New South Wales and the Northern Suburbs Rugby Club. The SFS is the second largest stadium in Sydney, with the Olympic stadium claiming the largest stadium title. The SFS, professional testing facilities and specialist coaches were generously sponsored by the Australasian Rugby Association, the NSW Waratahs Rugby Associations and the local Filipino community based in Sydney.

Manila Nomads were forced to dig deep last Saturday as the Cebu Dragons sensed they might have the chance of causing an upset. In the end the tiring veteran pack, supported by a far more youthful backline showed resolute defence to hold on for a 31-21 win.

Welcome to Rugby in the Philippines. The sport has been played here since the early 20th century and in the last seven years has seen a substantial growth in popularity.
There are now five senior clubs, several development clubs, ladies touch-rugby teams and a very active schools and youth rugby scene. The national team are this year vying for promotion to Division 2 of the Asian 5 Nations and the 7’s team won silver medals at the 2007 South East Asian Games.

2009 will go down as a huge year for any rugby fan as the sport finally achieved Olympic status once again and will after a 92 year hiatus return to the biggest stage at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games. Another great afternoon of rugby on Saturday at the Aboitiz Field saw the Cebu Dragons play some of their best rugby of the year to comfortably beat the Low Flyers, scoring six tries to four. This was a hard fought match, with the Low Flyers, missing a few key players such as the holidaying Hola Iketau, outplayed by the revitalised Dragons.

The Philippines reinforced against Pakistan, what had been patently apparent in their first two games of this round robin tournament, in that their three-quarters had far too much quality and class for the opposition at this level. Added to that there has been no occasion when an individual has ever given such a consummate performance in the colours of the Philippines at any level, as Ned Stephenson did last Saturday.
