Army Red march on

Sighs of relief all around as the focus moved back one hundred per cent to the legitimate rugby action at Bombay Gymkhana yesterday.

First up Uzbekistan took on the runners-up of the last two years Chennai Cheetahs. The Cheetahs no doubt influenced by their Kiwi imports, treated the crowd to their own version of the ‘Tamil Haka’ before the game. Unfortunately for them, it didn’t manage to inspire them enough to propel them to glory.

Uzbekistan took control of the game immediately and did not relinquish their stranglehold throughout. They led 10-0 at half-time and added a further twelve unanswered points in the second half to record a convincing 22-0 win.

The hard yards!

The Uzbeks in short, are no mugs and will certainly be no pushover for Army Red on Sunday. They have a rock solid defence having only conceded five points in three games thus far. It remains to be seen whether they can continue to hold fast against the expected onslaught from the military men.

Army Red secured their final berth with a come from behind win over home side Bombay Gymkhana. This was one of the outstanding games of the week. Army led 7-3 at the break and then had the audacity to take the lead over the two time defending champions and odds on favourites. At 10-7 the dream of a huge upset was very much alive amongst the watching fans, but from the moment they went behind the Army did not show even the slightest weakness in any facet of the game. They overhauled Gymkhana courtesy of a penalty try and with the final score-line at 19-10 marched into a third final and cemented their position as India’s finest club side.
